The Perfect Bloody Mary

We love to wake up late on New Year’s morning and enjoy a refreshing, delicious Bloody Mary. We have found that if one or two of us happens to wake up with a slight headache, that this drink will soothe our rough edges a bit.

An excellent tomato juice is key to a good Bloody Mary, try to find a high quality juice in the juice section of your local grocer. If your store has an Italian section, look for tomato juice there.

We are gluten free, so we stay away from wheat based vodkas. We prefer Tito’s vodka, which is made from potatoes, but you can use any vodka that you like.

You can also adjust the hot sauce for your personal taste. Just add more or less depending in the level of heat you prefer. The same goes for the horseradish. I recommend at least a little horseradish for the flavor it adds to the drink, but it can be adjusted according to your taste as well.

For garnish I have seen everything, both possible and seemingly impossible, stuffed onto the rim of the glass. I have been guilty of doing the same from time to time. We lay out an extensive Bloody Mary bar every year at our annual fishing derby and here are some of the garnishes we put out:

  1. celery
  2. shrimp
  3. string cheese
  4. pickled asparagus
  5. dilly beans
  6. bacon
  7. pearl onions
  8. grape tomatoes

This recipe is great with or without the vodka. I generally make mine virgin, but that is entirely up to you.

Please drink responsibly and please, please, please never drink and drive!
