Gorp or “Good old raisins and peanuts” was a staple in our home when my kids were growing up. Our recipe wasn’t quite just raisins and peanuts, but they loved it and it went everywhere with us. In the car, in lunch boxes, camping, baseball games and dance recitals, it was always in my bag. I still have the enormous bowl that we would make and store it in.
My children were also in charge of putting the gorp together. We placed all the ingredients on the table and my oldest would take over as head chef, telling my youngest what to do. Some things never change.
When they were done, we would have a big bowl of gorp and a slightly bigger mess. Fortunately, it was always an easy clean up.
In the hours before dinner, my kids knew that they could have some gorp to hold them over without getting in trouble.
The candy covered chocolates give it a sweet touch without the mess. If you like, you can skip them. The mix has changed very little since they were small. We would try new add ins or leave things out from time to time, but we always seemed to go back to this tried and true version. Use your favorites to make it your own.
No cooking required, just measure, mix and store – it is the perfect, almost mess free snack to always have around.
